Perceived past and future changes in marine environments: community perspectives from coastal Vietnam
Understanding community perspectives on environmental change is paramount for effective marine management. This study, conducted within Vietnam’s Cù Lao Chàm–Hội An Biosphere Reserve, empirically assessed the perceptions of 252 coastal residents regarding marine environments over the past and anticipated future decade. Analysis revealed structured perceptions clustered around marine resources, water quality, aquaculture, and habitats, with significant declines in resources and aquaculture anticipated. Notably, differing perceptions between mainland and island communities highlight the influence of local context.
Marine heatwaves are harming human health in surprising ways
Marine heatwaves, once primarily understood as threats to marine ecosystems, are now recognized as a growing danger to human health. Research validates that unusually warm ocean temperatures can intensify storms, promote harmful algal blooms, and diminish seafood availability—directly impacting coastal livelihoods. Beyond these tangible effects, studies indicate a correlation between marine heatwaves and increased rates of anxiety, grief, and depression within vulnerable communities. Some coastal cities are sinking faster than the ocean is rising
Coastal communities face a compounding threat beyond rising sea levels: accelerated land subsidence. New research validates that densely populated coastal regions experience an average relative sea-level rise of approximately 6 millimeters annually – almost three times the global average. Contributing factors include groundwater extraction, urban development, and geological processes. This phenomenon significantly amplifies coastal vulnerability.
