The Panama Canal Authority has announced a two-stage reduction in the maximum draft for vessels using its Neopanamax locks, due to falling water levels in Gatun Lake and drought-like conditions.
Shipping operators were formally notified of the upcoming restrictions.
According to the canal authority, the changes are part of an ongoing resource management strategy designed to ensure long-term sustainability and conserve water without disrupting daily vessel traffic.
From 26 August 2026, the maximum draft will be reduced to 48 feet, equivalent to 14.63 metres, and from 3 September, 2026, the draft will be further limited to 47.5 feet, or 14.48 metres.
The Panama Canal authority said that the daily transit capacity of the strategic waterway will not be affected by the imposition of these draft limits, adding that the current volume of Canal traffic will continue as normal.
How ever, informing shipping companies beforehand allows them to adjust their ship loading levels, as no timeline has been given for how long the 47.5-foot draft restriction will remain in place.
These restrictions are the fourth and fifth such amendments that were introduced since December 2025, when officials of the Panama Canal authority began conservation protocols to prepare for the 2026 dry season.
According to sources, the present strategy will depend on hydrological Modelling and the lessons learned during the severe drought of 2023 and 2024.
Specialists have also been called upon to actively monitor weather patterns and to provide regular updates to help evaluate potential long term affects from the El Niño phenomenon.
Any other operational adjustments will be communicated to the maritime industry in case the environmental conditions improve or deteriorate.
