Perceived past and future changes in marine environments: community perspectives from coastal Vietnam
Understanding community perspectives on environmental change is paramount for effective marine management. This study, conducted within Vietnam’s Cù Lao Chàm–Hội An Biosphere Reserve, empirically assessed the perceptions of 252 coastal residents regarding marine environments over the past and anticipated future decade. Analysis revealed structured perceptions clustered around marine resources, water quality, aquaculture, and habitats, with significant declines in resources and aquaculture anticipated. Notably, differing perceptions between mainland and island communities highlight the influence of local context.

Reversing biodiversity loss demands robust action, and designating strictly protected areas (SPAs) is a demonstrably effective strategy. Achieving the European Biodiversity Strategy’s 10% marine SPA target requires expanding beyond coastal zones to encompass challenging offshore ecosystems. This study explores how maritime spatial planning (MSP) can unify disparate knowledge sources—ecological zonings, stakeholder input, and oceanographic data—to inform SPA network development in the Northwestern Mediterranean.
