Microbiome baseline for an Arctic sentinel: spatial patterning of nasal and anal microbiomes in ringed seals

Ringed seals ( *Pusa hispida* ) serve as vital sentinels of Arctic environmental change, yet comprehensive baseline microbiome data across their circumpolar distribution remain limited. This study establishes the first integrated nasal and anal microbiome baseline for this species, profiling microbial communities from 90 free-ranging seals across eight Arctic locations. Results reveal distinct nasal and anal microbiome structures, with latitude influencing anal microbiome diversity. Notably, shifts in bacterial genera—such as increased *Psychrobacter* northward—were observed, offering a valuable reference for future health monitoring.

A recent study evaluated taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity across eight Zhejiang islands, revealing significant variation—with northern islands exhibiting the highest values. Structural equation modeling highlighted a positive relationship between marine environmental factors and diversity (0.675), a negative socioeconomic impact (-0.173), and an indirect, negative climate influence (-0.456).
