First expedition Jaywun research vessel: assessment of microplastics from international waters, Spain to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E
The inaugural Jaywun research vessel expedition has yielded a transboundary assessment of microplastic (MP) pollution across critical international shipping corridors, from Spain to Abu Dhabi. Analyzing 100 surface-water samples collected across six regions—including the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Arabian Gulf—the study revealed MP concentrations ranging from 4 to 290 particles per liter. Notably, the Arabian Sea exhibited the highest mean concentrations, with polyester and polyethylene terephthalate dominating detected polymers.
Way more Great Whites in the Atlantic than researchers once thought
Recent longitudinal data analysis indicates a significantly higher population of *Carcharodon carcharias*—Great White Sharks—in the Atlantic Ocean than previously estimated. Empirical observations, detailed in a recent Outer Banks Voice report, suggest the Atlantic functions as a critical migratory highway for these apex predators. This finding challenges existing models of Great White distribution and underscores the need for integrated ocean intelligence to better understand their behavior and ensure effective conservation strategies.
