Iran warned that if the United States and Israel attack its islands or coasts, then it would deploy naval mines across the Persian Gulf and close it to commercial shipping.

Iran’s National Defense Council said that any attempt by “the enemy” would lead to Tehran mining the shipping route and also the communication lines throughout the Gulf region.

It added that the measures would be catastrophic and involve different types of naval mines, including floating ones that can be launched from the coast.

In such circumstances, the statement warned, the Persian Gulf would be in a similar situation to the Strait of Hormuz for a long period of time, which would affect global shipping.

It added that the responsibility for such a decision would be with the party which would initiate the attack.

The Defense Council added that ships belonging to non-belligerent countries can cross the Strait of Hormuz only after cooperating with Iran.

Hormuz has been disrupted since March, which has increased shipping costs and pushed global oil prices.
