A worker at the Port of Baltimore died on Monday after being struck by a piece of equipment during a cargo-handling operation at the Dundalk Marine Terminal, according to Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police.
The worker was identified as 53-year-old David Deon Smith. MDTA Police said officers responded to the terminal shortly after 9 a.m. after receiving a report of an injured person.
Police officers found Smith after he was struck by equipment and attempted life-saving measures at the scene. He was later taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities have not released details about the type of equipment involved or the circumstances that led to the incident. MDTA Police said investigators are continuing to look into the accident.
Jonathan Daniels, executive director of the Maryland Port Administration, informed port employees that Smith was an International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) worker who was fatally injured during a cargo-handling operation at the terminal.
“Our ILA members are the backbone of the Port of Baltimore. While the individual’s name has not been publicly released pending notifications, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family, the ILA, and the entire Port of Baltimore community,” Daniels said in a message to employees.
The Dundalk Marine Terminal is one of the facilities operated as part of the Port of Baltimore’s cargo network. Workers at the terminal are involved in handling cargo and supporting vessel-related operations.
The Port of Baltimore has not reported any disruption to cargo operations following the incident.
