where to find jobs US not red states?

Our take

Finding post-graduation job opportunities in the U.S. outside of red states can be challenging, especially for those seeking a supportive environment aligned with their identity. With a B.S. in biology, particularly marine biology, you have a unique skill set that can open doors in various fields, including research, fieldwork, and government positions. To enhance your job search, consider expanding your focus to include remote positions or roles in larger cities within purple or blue states.

I read through the rules and I believe this is acceptable but please let me know if a different sub would be better.

I graduate with my B.S in biology, marine biology concentration, in spring 2027. I have no ties to a particular area, so anywhere is really fine, but I’d MUCH prefer it not be a super intensely cold place, regular winter is fine but not like Maine or Alaska if you feel me. I also cannot live in a red state due to my identity. Which feels like it has essentially wiped out all my options, I really didn’t feel like I was being THAT picky but indeed seems to say otherwise.

I have been trying to find an idea of post grad jobs as I could technically start applying as soon as this fall, and I’m coming up absolutely hopeless.

I literally just need a job that will pay me a livable wage, I don’t have a parents house to stay at while I save money kind of situation, so this job will need to support me. I don’t need to make crazy money, literally 45k or a high hourly rate is fine I just need to be able to afford a crappy apartment and I haven’t found a single job that will give me both that and I will be qualified for post grad.

I’ve looked in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia (iffy territory but I would) Californian Oregon and Hawaii, and a bit in RI and MA but the cold doesn’t charm me, I live in MA now and want to leave but if I had to to survive it could be okay.

Let me know if I’m missing something in the job search, or I’m somehow being unrealistic. I’m fine with anything, research, field work, lab work, government jobs, whatever. hell I would even apply to a paid masters or phd if it was fully funded. All I ask is you please be kind if I’m being dumb somehow, I’ve had a really rough time and don’t want to compromise on certain things because my life has been so stressful I just don’t know how much more I could take.
