U.S Navy Submarine Seen Near Gibraltar After Trump Dismisses Tehran’s Response To U.S Ceasefire Proposal
Our take

The movement of the U.S. Navy’s Ohio-class nuclear submarine near Gibraltar, a British overseas territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, has raised speculations regarding the escalation of the U.S.-Iran war.
This development comes at a time when Trump rejected Iran’s response to a U.S ceasefire proposal aimed at reducing regional hostilities.
In a post on Truth Social, U.S President Donald Trump wrote, “I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it -TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!”
The USS Alaska was spotted arriving at Gibraltar on Sunday under security arrangements after Trump had delivered his sharpest criticism towards Iran to date.
Photographs published by the media showed a 200-meter exclusion zone near the South Mole Area and Royal Marines reaching the site via Royal Air Force transport aircraft, signalling further military buildup in the region.
There are also reports about Iran planning to deploy mine-carrying dolphins in the region to target U.S warships amidst a shift in military tactics.
Tehran faces extreme economic pressure due to the U.S sanctions coupled with a blockade of its port facilities, which has restricted the movement of its oil exports, a major source of revenue for the Islamic Republic.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has even threatened to damage communication and internet cables that pass through the region’s waterways if the U.S. undertakes any sort of military action or aggression against Iran.
According to a few reports and online speculations, the nuclear submarine might move to the Mediterranean as tensions in West Asia continue to increase.
However, no confirmation has been given by the U.S. Military regarding the arrival of the submarine in Gibraltar.
Trump Criticises Iran’s Response To Its Ceasefire Proposal
Iranian media reported that Tehran had sent its response to the U.S proposal through Pakistan.
The main focus remains ending the active conflict in the region, along with the sanctions imposed by the U.S. on Iran, along with removing the naval blockade on its ports and reducing the number of American military personnel deployed in the region.
Iran has also asked the U.S. to stop supporting Israel’s military operations in Lebanon and Gaza.
Why the U.S. Submarines’ Movement Matters
The USS Alaska belongs to the U.S Navy’s Ohio-class submarine fleet, which is among the most significant parts of the American naval arsenal.
The class includes ballistic missile submarines and guided missile variants capable of conducting long-range strike operations and deterrence missions.
Each submarine is 171 m long and displaces around 18,700 tonnes underwater, making it among the largest subs in the world.
The submarine’s presence in Gibraltar comes at a time of a regional geopolitical crisis when Trump, in an interview aired on Sunday, said that the U.S. will tighten its grip since Iran’s military abilities had been severely impacted.
“They have no navy, no air force, they have no anti-aircraft weaponry, no leaders,” Trump said, adding that Iran would need decades to rebuild if the current trajectory continued.
