Russia’s “Karakurt” Missile Corvette Hit By Ukrainian Forces At Caspian Sea Base
Our take

A Russian Project 22800 Karakurt-class missile corvette has been struck near its base in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, during an overnight Ukrainian operation on 7 May 2026, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The vessel was identified as a multi-purpose small missile ship capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles, which Russia has repeatedly used in strikes against targets in Ukraine.
Ukrainian military officials said the extent of the damage was still being assessed.
The General Staff stated that the strike was carried out in the area of the Kaspiysk naval base in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan, located on the Caspian Sea.
According to the statement, Ukraine’s Defence Forces also struck a Russian command post in Sosnivka in occupied Luhansk Oblast and a UAV command centre near Yasne in Donetsk Oblast during the same operation.
Strikes were also reported on an ammunition depot in Kalmykivka and a fuel and lubricants storage facility near Smolianynove in Luhansk Oblast.
Ukrainian forces also targeted concentrations of Russian personnel near Dersove in Donetsk Oblast and Smyle in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
The General Staff said Ukraine’s forces would continue striking Russian military assets “until the complete cessation of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”
The latest attack came only days after Ukrainian forces struck another Karakurt-class missile ship at Primorsk port in Russia’s Leningrad region on 3 May.
According to the source material, that vessel was carrying its full load of eight Kalibr cruise missiles at the time of the strike.
The 3 May strike also damaged a patrol boat, a tanker linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, and infrastructure at the Baltic oil export terminal in Primorsk.
Separately, Ukrainian Defence Intelligence operations were also reported to have carried out attacks in Crimea, although details were limited in the statement.
Project 22800 “Karakurt” Class
The Project 22800 “Karakurt” class was developed for the Russian Navy as a compact missile warship designed for high-firepower strike operations.
Despite displacing around 800 tonnes and measuring roughly 60 metres in length, the vessels carry a vertical launch system with eight cells capable of firing Kalibr cruise missiles or P-800 Oniks anti-ship missiles.
The ships are also equipped with a 76.2 mm AK-176MA naval gun and AK-630 close-in weapon systems. Later variants additionally feature the Pantsir-ME naval air defence system.
The Kalibr missile system has been widely used by Russia during the war against Ukraine, including strikes launched from naval platforms operating far from combat zones.
