Denmark Announces $276 Million Assistance Package For Ukraine After Incident Involving Russian Frigate & Danish Helicopter

Denmark recently announced a military support package for Ukraine, worth DKK 1.8 billion or $276 million, after an incident involving a Danish military helicopter and a Russian frigate exacerbated security concerns.

The package details could be made public soon; however, sources suggest it would focus on strengthening Kyiv’s air defences.

As of now, there is no information about the delivery schedule of the detection equipment or the list of ammunition that would be provided under the support package.

According to sources, Denmark said that its helicopter was conducting photographic surveillance of the Russian vessel in international waters off Gedser when it fired two flares towards the helicopter, almost missing it narrowly. Russia, on the other hand, blamed the Danish pilots for dangerous manoeuvres.

The decision was announced on September 18, 2026 and comes after this incident, with Denmark’s Defence Minister of Denmark, Jeppe Bruun, stating that Copenhagen would reply to such Russian tactics and intimidation by offering assistance to Ukraine as soon as possible.

Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, strongly condemned Russia for the incident and summoned its ambassador in the capital.

Danish Officials also clarified that despite mounting pressure, Copenhagen would continue supporting Ukraine, and in fact accelerate it, after this security incident.

Denmark has been an ardent supporter of Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022, providing financial assistance regularly.

It remains to be seen what the package holds and what its operational value is, which depends on how the funds are used to procure equipment and ammunition, which would strenthen Ukrainian position when it comes to air defences.

A support package announcement could mean a lot of things, from faster contracting to transferring existing stocks or delivery of equipment before schedule from a key manufacturer, which has different impacts on the battlefield.

The package shows the wider commitment of the Danish Government to the Ukrainian cause and also ensures maritime security.

In February 2026, the defense ministry of the country revealed an extra funding worth DKK 3.8 billion for Ukraine.

The Ministry also discussed Denmark’s role in providing funds for the production of defence equipment by the Ukrainian defence industry with the help of allies and partners, highlighting the cooperation between both countries in defence.
