A 113-year-old shipwreck has emerged from Serbia’s Sava River as prolonged heat and drought push water levels across Europe lower, affecting shipping, power generation, farming and water supplies.

The rusty remains of the Slovenian, a steam tugboat built in 1913, appeared earlier this month near Sremska Mitrovica, about 70 km (45 miles) northwest of Belgrade.

Parts of the wreck have been visible during earlier periods of low water, but local people say they have never seen so much of the vessel above the surface. Serbian media have called it “Sava’s Titanic.”

“It’s been several years since it was last seen, so there is quite an interest,” said Andrija Popovic, a historian and head of the town museum. “It’s truly something you don’t see every day,” he said.

The shipwreck has appeared as rivers across Europe fall to very low levels during a prolonged period of heat and drought. The falling waters have also exposed old warships, ancient structures and prehistoric remains in several countries.

The Danube, Europe’s second-largest river, has reached record-low levels in places, affecting traffic and severely impacting nuclear power plants in Hungary and Romania.

The monthslong drought has also damaged crops from the Netherlands to Bosnia and caused water shortages as far as the Alps.

A ship that survived two World Wars

According to Popovic, the Slovenian was built in 1913 at a shipyard in Budapest, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The tugboat was about 54 metres (177 feet) long and was originally named Vag, after the Vah River in present-day Slovakia. Its steam engine allowed it to pull heavy cargo between Budapest and other towns along the Danube.

The vessel largely stopped operating during World War I.

After the war, the Austro-Hungarian Empire broke apart and ownership of the ship passed to the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes as part of war reparations. The country later became Yugoslavia.

The ship was renamed Slovenian during this period. Popovic said it remains unclear why that name was chosen.

During World War II, Yugoslavia was occupied by Nazi Germany. After Belgrade was liberated in 1944, Yugoslav anti-fascist forces used the vessel to transport wounded fighters and equipment as German troops retreated west, Popovic said.

The ship sank in late April 1945 after hitting a German mine while carrying wounded fighters.

“It sank and has stayed in the same place since that day,” Popovic said.

Falling Danube reveals German warships

The Slovenian is not the only historic vessel to emerge from Europe’s rivers.

Near Serbia’s eastern border with Romania, the low Danube has exposed rusty remains of German ships. The vessels belonged to Nazi Germany’s Black Sea fleet and were deliberately sunk near the end of World War II as German troops withdrew from Romania and Soviet forces moved further into Europe.

Some of the ships are still carrying weapons.

Similar discoveries have been made during earlier droughts. In 2024, several sunken Nazi German ships emerged from the Danube, with some still carrying explosives. Dozens of German Black Sea fleet vessels also appeared near Prahovo in 2022 after water levels reached record lows.

Other parts of Europe have also seen unusual discoveries.

In Italy, the worst drought in 70 years exposed parts of an ancient bridge over the Tiber River. The bridge had been used during the Roman era and had fallen into disrepair by the third century.

In Bulgaria, falling Danube levels helped researchers find and recover the remains of a woolly mammoth. The discovery included a jawbone, tusks, a shoulder blade, ribs and other bone fragments.

Experts said the mammoth appeared to have been young. The dark colour of the bones may suggest that the animal spent a long time in a marshy environment. The remains were considered important because they were well preserved and found together in one area, suggesting they belonged to the same animal.

Drought puts pressure on shipping and infrastructure

The falling river levels are creating problems beyond the appearance of historic wrecks.

The Danube is an important inland shipping route, and exceptionally low water levels have disrupted traffic. Lower water can make navigation more difficult and affect commercial transport along the river.

The drought has also affected nuclear power plants in Hungary and Romania.

Agriculture has suffered from the prolonged dry conditions, with crops affected from the Netherlands to Bosnia. Water shortages have also reached the Alps.

By late July 2026, about half of the European Union and the United Kingdom were experiencing drought, according to the European Drought Observatory. Around 9% of the territory was at the most severe “alert” level.

The EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service says Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent. Temperatures there have increased at about twice the global average rate since the 1980s.

Scientists say climate change is making periods of extreme heat and dryness more frequent and intense.

Serbian hydrology expert Dejan Vladikovic said the current drought was caused by a lack of winter snow followed by a very dry spring.
